On Healing and Healers

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Doc_Jon_Percepto] Doc Jon Percepto When I was in college, one of the courses that I found most interesting was Medical Anthropology. It covered medical practices from a cross-cultural standpoint. Although it was a reasonable approach, it was also one that was often at odds with the scientific approach that western medicine embodies, primarily because in many cultures, healing is also mixed with mystical practices and beliefs. I generally do not like to use the word mystical or mysticism, because it denotes some kind of mystery usually not knowable. However, for lack of a better term, I will use it for the time being. Although the thought of distinguishing healing from medicine would seem radical to the west, I do see it as analogous as viewing the distinction between spirituality and religion. A healer could be a physician, but not necessarily; while the reverse could also be true for some physicians, who heal, but not generally in the mystical sense. Although some physicians can be “mystical healers”, their ability doesn’t come from western training. While western medicine is steeped in science, healing and healers have been around for centuries in many different ways and in just about every culture. There is the medicine man in Native American, African and South American cultures to mention just a few. What makes a healer different from a physician? What constitutes the basis for healing? What are the ways healers heal? These are all questions that are valid to ask and reasonable for inquiry. They are also questions that are difficult to address in one short essay. My purpose is not to provide a detailed accounting, but just give an overview of the process. It’s up to the reader to question, explore and come to his own conclusions. - The Basis for Healing Many belief systems view the body as analogous to the universe as being composed of energy that is either harmonious or disharmonious. When one is harmonious with the forces of nature (energy), health ensues. When ones energy is disharmonious, sickness can develop. The task of the healer then becomes to find where the disharmony in the person’s body exists, and help them to restore it to a state of harmony. In western medicine, a comparable view is HOMEOSTASIS. Wikipedia defines homeostasis as “the property of living organisms to regulate its internal environment to maintain a stable, constant condition, by means of multiple dynamic equilibrium adjustments, controlled by interrelated regulation mechanisms.” In other words, homeostasis is a condition of harmony and balance, and the body, with interconnected mechanisms, works to maintain that balance. Human life and health exists within certain boundaries where the body maintains all the systems in a harmonious interrelationship. If anything upsets that balance, then the person will get sick. How that illness defines itself depends on the kind and location of the disharmony. In addition to the energy contained within each body, the individual cells also have a unique energy level. So there are many things to consider when health and illness is concerned. Perhaps cancer is the breakdown of the energy level of a cell that then proliferates and spreads, interfering with the other processes of the body by interrupting the homeostasis of the whole system. How the healer works to restore the balance of the person’s body can take on a variety of forms. Herbs that have been known to be effective in restoring the bodys energy balance can be used, or with acupuncture where certain nodes of energy regulation can be manipulated with inserting specially designed needles into the body at those nodes, then rotating the needle to stimulate the flow of energy to the weakened area(s). Other kinds of healing can involve the healer who is able, by some process, to draw out the illness from the sick person, take it into their own aura (energy) and then discharge it out by a process that is still unclear. Again, these are methods that are not generally accepted in the west because they dont necessarily lend themselves to the scientific method or to reproducibility, because they largely depend on the ability of the healer. The scientific community, however, views the experimenter as simply the facilitator of the experiment; his energy level is not supposed to intermix with the experiment he is performing because it would affect the ability of the experiment to be reproduced by someone else. This is primarily the difficulty in using the scientific method to prove healing. We can’t separate or isolate the energy of the healer from the person he is healing. It’s not possible to reproduce the healing with someone else who claims to heal since their level of energy will be different, and the basis of the healing will often be determined by the level of energy of the healer. [from the author] There are other ways to conceptualize illness and healing. Although the differences are clear, there is a place for western medicine as there are for other forms of medicine and healing. The important thing is to have respect for the varieties of approaches and to recognize that those forms, unfamiliar to us, can work and do have at its basis a long tradition of theory forged from a view of the world and universe that goes beyond what we normally consider as part of the scientific tradition. By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Grant_Cliv]Grant Cliv Secured consolidation loan is designed for giving an organised shape to your several debts. It becomes very miserable to lead life peacefully, when you are facing numerous creditors at your door every day. Secured consolidation loan brings a complete relief from the torture of dealing with these harassments of creditors every month. For many people it is hard to keep a control on borrowing habits. Due to their spend thrift nature, they become easy prey for lenders, who have keen eyes on such people. They are effortlessly melted with the tall claims and tempting offers of the cunning lenders and end up taking their various loan schemes. By the time they realise their fault, it gets too late and they are surrounded by ocean of debts and creditors. It leads to great anxiety and financial stress. Secured consolidation loan can turn as blessing in disguise for such persons when there is no way out. Secured consolidation loan requires collateral which could be your home, vehicle, precious gems, etc. You need to place it as collateral with the lender. In return, lender gives you low interest rate, small monthly amount and allots a long period of repayment, generally between 5 to 25 years. You can get a big amount to consolidate your debts. The risk factor in secured consolidation loan is giving up your property if lender does not get his repayment on time. Secured consolidation loan eliminates all your previous creditors; you have to bear with only one creditor every month. However, it does not imply your debts have been eliminated; they are only diverted for the sake of ease. You can successfully find a reasonable lender if you surf the financial websites. When you apply online you save the time and the trouble of applying in person, you can find better rates than you may receive at your local payday advance center, and its safer to access all your private information from home. Most online lending companies will require that you give them your address , phone number, Sin number, Your bank name, Check number, Bank Account number, references, and if you are paid weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Usually, you will need to fax in your verification to the payday loan or cash advance company. But, there are payday loan companies online that have no faxing or faxless verification programs. They will usually verify information electronically or by phone. There is no need to be concerned about giving out this kind of information to payday companies as all of them have very strict privacy rules in place and follow them closely. When you are giving out this information you should ensure that the page address you are entering them into begins with https://. The s at the end of http states that you are on a secure site that uses encryption to protect your valuable information. The Best Sago Palm Care

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Andrew Caxton If you are looking for a tree to brighten up either the home or garden then a planting shade tree may be just what you need. They have the ability to make the space around them look tranquil and homely and they also make everything seem a little more attractive within the garden. However, you do need to ensure that you choose the right tree for you and your needs. Choosing the Right Shade Tree for Your Needs There are so many different types of trees which you can plant in order to give you shade from the sun. However, care does need to be taken otherwise you could end up with a tree which is completely unsuitable. Things you need to take into consideration include: How tall the tree will grow How much care the tree will need How much light the tree needs All of the above will make a difference to which tree you actually select. Obviously some grow bigger than others and if you are looking for a tree for your small garden, a huge oak tree may not be what you need! So you need to take into consideration the needs of each tree you are considering. Are you looking at planting a specific shape of tree? It may sound strange but trees do grow in different shapes but most people do not really take much notice of that. It is also important to not plant the tree too close to the house. It is a well known fact that trees can drain the moisture out of houses and that can cause the walls to crack and become damaged over time. So, space the tree a good distance away and that way your home will stay safe. You will need to consider just how hardy the tree you are planting is. If you purchase a sago palm plant for example, it will need specialist care and attention and it may not be suitable for all weathers. In order to find out you need to do your research and the same goes with all different types of trees. You cannot expect the tree to grow and protect you from the sun if you do not even bother to take the time to research its needs and look after it properly. Overall some trees are better for shading you from the sun than others and some good ones include maple, oak, honey locust and ash trees. You just have to make sure that you do the right amount of research and know what the tree needs in order to help it survive. The String Algae Blues

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By Brett Fogle Now that Spring is upon us and things are coming back to life in your pond with the warmer weather, many of us are battling with string algae. String algae is caused primarily by a combination of the buildup of organic nutrients in the water, and sunlight. What happens is that during winter, when things slow down and many of us turn off our filters, decaying leaves and other organic matter (including fish waste) begin to break down in the pond. The result is an excess of organic nutrients in the water, which is essentially food for algae growth. Add sunlight and some warmer weather to these conditions, and you have an ideal environment for algae growth, both the green water and string algae varieties. The green water, or ‘pea soup’ algae is easily eradicated with a properly sized UV sterilizer, which we highly recommend. String algae, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated and difficult to get rid of. Because it is usually attached to the walls and rocks of the pond, it becomes more difficult to get rid of and unfortunately, there aren’t and easy solutions. But we are going to outline a few remedies here that will help. First, we recommend a pond cleaning - if possible. For those of you who don’t clean your pond at least once annually, there are many good reasons to do this. By cleaning out your pond, and removing as much of the decaying organic material from the bottom, you are also removing much of the ‘food’ for the algae. Another good thing to do is to cut back on feeding your fish, until you get your string algae under control. The fish food, both eaten and digested, and the uneaten food, will both also contribute to this algae growth - so don’t worry about the fish, just stop feeding for awhile. There are several products available which can and will ‘help’ with the string algae problem, like barley bales and/or barley pellets. The idea is that by adding these to the pond, they will also start to decay in the water, and the resulting natural ‘humic acids’ will actually oxidize the algae, and help keep it under control. Farmers in the 13th century noticed that lakes with bales of barley straw in them, had much less muck and string algae in them. So, now we use them in fish ponds. Barley pellets are a newer version of the same idea, but will generally start working faster. Barley straw needs several weeks before it starts working, and only after it starts to ‘rot’ in the water. Another way to help with string algae is to raise your salt level in the pond. Anything over .3% will help control the algae, but is best for KOI ponds, as the salt may also negatively affect water garden plants. We also really like the Microbe Lift line of products. They also seem to help control string algae, by adding millions of beneficial microbes and beneficial bacteria that will feed off of this algae and also help to decompose any other organic waste in the pond. An alternate method that many pond owner prefer is to add a chemical algaecide like PondCare’s Algae Fix. This is safe for fish and plants, and does seem to temporarily knock out suspended and filamenous algae, but does need to be added periodically for long term control. One new method that we’ve been hearing more and more about is adding a certain type of clay to the pond water. Calcium Montmorillonite Clay is gaining popularity among KOI pond owners and water gardeners as an effective, natural method of algae control. It is also noted as having many beneficial qualities for the fish in the pond. Hope this helps! Happy pondkeeping. 4 Things To Consider About Weight Loss Supplements

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Donovan Baldwin Every day, millions of people spend millions of dollars on weight loss supplements. Most of these claim to grab fat, speed up metabolism, or prevent the body from gaining weight in some other manner. It seems like every day, we see new products coming on the market that promise to do these things for people. With well over 60% of the adult population of the U. S. overweight, there is a vast market for these products as well. Most people are concentrating on three points: ease, speed, and personal attractiveness. They want to be able to take a pill or tonic that will lose the weight for them. They also feel that, as one lady put it to me, “If I could just lose the weight, I would look better and feel so much better about myself.” So how do these products stack up? What can they really do for the dieter? That adds a fourth dimension - effectiveness. EASE: Okay, I can’t find much fault there. Most are pills or liquids that need to be taken once or twice a day. That should satisfy most people’s desire for ease. SPEED: Now, it starts to get a little sticky. First of all, there are so many products making so many claims about what they will do for so many different people, it is difficult to say if any weight loss supplement really is as fast as it claims it CAN be. Take the most effective weight loss program in the universe, and have several thousand people follow it, and you will get several thousand results. Additionally, what works for one person might not work, or work as well, for her sister or brother. To make matters worse, how well any weight loss product works will depend to some extent on how it is combined with exercise, nutrition, rest, genetics, and so on. Second, speed in weight loss just MIGHT NOT be a good thing! As a matter of fact, weight lost TOO QUICKLY can actually endanger health. Just as a point, most weight loss supplements claim to do their work by altering or interfering with the normal processes of the body. PERSONAL ATTRACTIVENESS: I may be a bit biased, but when I find someone attractive, it often has as much to do with their outlook on life, and their personal enjoyment of life, as it does with how much their body weighs or how it is shaped. I am personally aware of people who lost large amounts of weight and yet did not improve their “attractiveness” at all. I also know people who are not what society would consider to be physically attractive, and yet they are attractive to those around them. I know from personal experience that many overweight people feel that if they could just lose the weight their lives would change for the better. On some levels, that sometimes happens, but, if the weight loss comes about through artificial intervention, such as with a pill or through surgical intervention, they often find that their lives have not changed as much as they thought. In some cases, life can be even harder as a direct or indirect result of the method they used to lose weight. EFFECTIVENESS: When someone decides to lose weight for health reasons, they are, or should be, making a commitment to change the lifestyle choices they have been making that have gotten them to where they are. If instead, they take a pill to disrupt the normal processes of the body in hopes that the pill will change their lives, they will most certainly be disappointed. Even if the pill does do what it says, they cannot continue depending on it to do this for them for the rest of their lives. Only a permanent change in lifestyle choices will result in permanent, healthy weight loss, and this involves nutrition, exercise, hydration, and rest and does not require weight loss supplements. Even those with drastic genetic predispositions towards obesity can take control of a portion of their weight and their health. I have a close personal friend who weighs over 400 lbs. She is young (mid 20’s), beautiful, and vivacious, but her weight is gradually wearing her down. Her health is slowly becoming impacted by her weight, and she continually expresses a desire to lose weight. However, she continues to drink several sodas sweetened with sugar daily. She sweetens her tea and coffee with sugar. She cooks and consumes huge meals with a high fat content when she is not ordering the most fat-laden offerings of the fast food palaces. She makes no adjustment in her lifestyle, and the closest she comes to exercise is when she becomes excited during a video game. Except for work, her life is lived almost entirely in front of a TV or a computer. She is genetically predisposed towards being overweight, but she could lose 100 or even 200 lbs simply by making different lifestyle choices. Instead, she opts to try each new diet fad or pill that hits the market only to be disappointed in the end. A FINAL NOTE ON WEIGHT LOSS SUPPLEMENTS: Are there truly chemicals and compounds, natural and synthetic that can enhance a weight loss program? Certainly there are, but not those that achieve the goal simply because someone swallows them. Almost every weight loss supplement on the market includes a phrase to the effect that the product will work “…best when used in conjunction with good nutrition and a regular exercise program…” or words similar. Nutrition and exercise are the keys. Even the best weight loss supplement can only enhance the effects of a healthy lifestyle based on these. Donovan Baldwin is a Dallas area writer.
