Use of Straw Bales for Construction Purposes

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Philip Culver Straw bale is a large package of raw or finished straws tightly bound with twine or wire and often wrapped. Straw bale is considered to be a waste product but it can be used for many purposes. Straw bale is durable, hence can be sold for bedding of animals, landscape supply, and can also be used in construction. The plant material that dries if left in the fields after a plant has fully matured is known as straw. A matured straw can be harvested for seed and is no longer alive. The bales are usually burned in most of the areas of the United States resulting in air pollution. Straw bale is mainly used for construction purposes in most of the parts of the world as the use of straw bale in construction is a less expensive alternative than that of constructing walls that are highly insulated and costly. It helps to cut down the construction costs. Straw bales were first used for construction by the states of the plains in the late 19th century and early part of the 20th century. The structures or buildings build using straw bales are sturdy and strong. Many of buildings built with straw bales have stood the test of time and are still standing and hence can be used to build many buildings such as schools, commercial buildings, homes to cut down the cost of raw material. The main reason for use of this type of construction method is the fact that it is an inexpensive method of construction. Straw bale is least expensive during harvest time as the added cost of storing the bales is factored. Thus its cost varies with the change in season. A straw bale must be protected from receiving moisture as it will make the straw bale less sturdy. The other main advantage of constructing buildings using straw bales is that it has a very good resistance to fire. This property of straw bale is inherited when the straw is packed very tightly in the bale. Tightly baled straw does not allow much air into it thus not allowing for combustion and hence making it fire resistant. Since the straw is baled very tightly and is thick it keeps pests out of the home and buildings. The plaster applied on the outside layer of the straw bale makes it non penetrable for the pests. The outside layer of plaster also helps to keep out small animals and rodents. Another reason for why straw is resistant to pests is the fact that the dead straw does not have much nutritional value that the pests would be attracted to hence making it pest resistant. No one would have ever imagined that a straw bale considered a waste product could be so useful and strong enough to build quality buildings and homes with fire, pests, rodents resistance. Next time if engineers used a straw bale for your home construction project then you must feel happy for it. http://www.homeandfamilywebonline.comis a site dedicated to providing information and articles on all types of shopping ideas and items. Do You Know Where You’re Going? Setting Marketing Goals Makes Your Marketing More Effective

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Andrea J. Stenberg Yogi Berra said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.” Too many people end up somewhere else with their marketing because they don’t have concrete goals for their marketing campaigns. But you already know your goal - increase sales. Isn’t that enough? No. You need to be more specific. Are you are looking for immediate cash flow or to gain long term customers? Do you want new customers or new businesses from previous customers? Do you have a specific product or service you are promoting or is this a campaign promoting your entire business? After answering these questions, also consider a concrete number of sales or the total sales volume you want. And include a time frame - by what date will you achieve this goal? Aiming for the Right Target Your goals will determine the type of marketing campaign you embark on. If you are looking for new sales from existing customers, your campaign will look very different from one aimed at attracting new customers. Marketing to previous customers may include letters or phone calls reminding them of follow-up actions they should take, letting them know about new services or even just a friendly reminder that you still exist. Attracting new clients may include advertising, sales letters, or cold calling. Without setting a specific goal, your marketing campaign might end up talking about the wrong things or targeting the wrong people. Motivation Many people hate marketing. They feel uncomfortable, hate to blow their own horns, or feel it is taking time away from money-making activities. And we all know avoiding something we hate is all too easy. But if you have clear, written goals for your marketing campaign, they can act as motivation to keep you going. If you have set a goal for generating $5,000 in new business it will be much easier to find the time to do the marketing than if you just have a vague notion that you will increase your sales. And if you’ve written down why you want the $5,000 and what you’ll do with it, you will find it even more motivating. Know if You Succeeded Engaging in a marketing campaign can be costly (in time or money) so this is not something you want to do by the seat of your pants. You need to know that not only will you recoup the direct costs of the campaign but earn additional income as well. Different marketing techniques work better for some types of businesses than others. You need a way to gauge whether this marketing strategy is working for you. Setting a clear goal that includes a sales total or number of new customers will allow you to gauge whether this campaign was worth your time and money. Next time you’ll have a better idea of whether this type of marketing strategy should be repeated. Final Steps Before you begin your next marketing campaign, remember to answer these questions: Who are you targeting? What are you promoting? How much of an increase are you aiming for? Why do you want this increase in sales? What will it mean to you, your business and your life if you achieve it? By what date will you achieve it? Answering these questions will help make sure you don’t end up somewhere else. Andrea J. Stenberg is a marketing consultant and writer. Digital Stethoscopes

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Damian_Sofsian] Damian Sofsian Digital stethoscopes are computer aided products which can read sound, vibration, or acoustic signals. Digital stethoscopes can store sound and this sound can be played again and again. The stored sound can be send to another colleague in case you want his opinion. Digital stethoscopes are often used by veterinarians. There are different types of digital stethoscopes such as the DRG Echo amplified digital stethoscope, Littmann electronic stethoscope, and web based remote digital stethoscope. A DRG Echo amplified digital stethoscope can switch easily between three modes of operation such as digital, diaphragm and bell. The digital mode boasts 400% increase in amplification over traditional stethoscopes. Its signal processing technology assists in filtering electronic noise. The headset has been configured for ease-of-use and the external noise reduction tube technology significantly reduces the amount of external noise heard through the stethoscope, while its stainless steel coils optimize internal acoustics. This digital stethoscope can replay sounds at regular and slow speeds. The Littmann electronic stethoscope also has three frequency response modes such as bell, diaphragm, and external range. It has an anatomically correct headset and the features of amplification and proprietary ambient noise reduction technology. This helps to reduce noise without eliminating critical body sounds. Moreover, its digital signal processing offers recording, storage and playback capabilities. It has the ability to transfer recorded sounds through an infrared transmission to another model or hand held device. A web-based remote digital stethoscope integrates current software, hardware interface devices, PC and Internet into the remotely operated virtual instrumentation. Digital remote stethoscope can also be easily connected to LAN and WAN. DRG Echo plus with data link is also used as a digital stethoscope. It has the ability to download the recorded patient data. A traditional stethoscope lets you only hear the sound with no amplification. But digital stethoscopes can amplify sound and record sound. Digital stethoscopes are handy in lab situations where students have a hard time listening with a traditional stethoscope. For Bass Fishing Success: Be the Bass

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Charles Hammer If what you want from your bass fishing is a nice day spent on the lake, then more power to you. Bass fishing for the unadulterated relaxation of it is one of the best and purest reasons to drop a line; however, if you’re angling day isn’t complete until you’ve caught and released a boatload or you’re looking to haul in a few trophies then you are going to need a more head on approach. You are going to need to know your enemy and plan your assault. Be the bass. Before deciding what direction to turn your boat for the day, consider the day itself. If you were a big, aggressive but somewhat lazy bass, where would you be in the early morning hours when the deep water might be cold and the day has just begun? Why in the shallows, sitting in the cover of the undergrowth watching the lake come to life. Same is true of the evening as the day winds down and the water starts to cool off. During these times, quietly reconnoiter the tall grass, the fallen logs, the underbelly of the lake world. Many bass may be starting and ending their days here, visible to the naked eye. As the sun traverses the sky, the fish will start to migrate to and from deeper water; you can often catch them in transit. Cast sinkers that drift into the edges of the grassy interface. Be patient, don’t bob the bait. This approach can be mighty fruitful on overcast days when the bass haven’t quite decided to go deep. Now that you’re thinking like a fish, consider your bait. Lots of bass fishing is done with big bait because bass are fierce fighting fish and big bait just seems the way to go. Truth be told, bass are hungry and hostile. They will strike on a large variety of lures. Think smaller lures, spinners and don’t forget the lowly plastic worm. Properly cast brightly colored worms are the number one bait for a reason. They catch bass. Shallow water is a good place to try a float worm. Straight worms get lots of bites in undergrowth. Once you have knocked down few ways to think like a bass, it’s important to write your discoveries down. Keep a detailed written record of the most productive and, unfortunately, the least productive ways you have developed for bass fishing. Make a log book part of your bass fishing equipment. Note the day and date of each excursion, the weather, the vegetation, the distance from the bank, the bait used. When you pull in that trophy, mark down the time; when you pull in that minnow, mark down the time. No detail is too small when developing your bass book. Bass are strong fish who put up a good fight; that’s the reason most bass fishers go after them. Study them and their habits and document your findings. You will find that your effort will ultimately pay off with larger and more consistent catches. After all, in order to land them you have to understand them. If you want to catch more bass you need to come over to http://www.AllAboutBassFishing.com. We provide many tips, tactics, articles and more to help with your next bass fishing adventure. Mesothelioma Lung Cancer - Asbestos Lawyers, Attorneys & Lawsuits

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Todd Going Mesothelioma is a rare but deadly type of cancer usually caused by exposure to asbestos or asbestos-containing products. The mesothelium is a thin mucous membrane that covers most major organs, and provides the moisture the organs need to move properly. Lubrication allows organs to move in order to circulate blood in the heart, or infuse it with oxygen in the lungs, or process food properly in the gastrointestinal tract. There are several different kinds of mesothelioma, but by far the most common is pleural, or lung-related mesothelioma. As asbestos enters the body through respiration, the microscopic shards pierce the lungs and lodge in the delicate pleural mesothelium. The shards irritate and fester in the mesothelium, and over time will most likely develop into mesothelioma. Most cases of this cancer take decades before any symptoms begin to appear, but by the time they manifest they are too advanced to treat. Other kinds of mesothelioma include pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the lining around the stomach and digestive tract; and pericardial mesothelioma that affects the lining of the sac that contains the heart. Most mesothelioma prognoses are not positive; victims rarely live longer than five years after their first diagnosis, and most succumb between six and 12 months. Many experts call mesothelioma the silent epidemic, because virtually every person in the United States has been exposed to asbestos at some point in time. Asbestos is naturally heat and flame resistant, pliable, durable, and was made into everything from babys clothing to brake pads to insulation to potting ceramics. Many of the current victims of the mesothelioma epidemic worked in or around military installations, as asbestos was a critical part of shipbuilding and other large scale manufacturing industries, but mesothelioma can strike anyone of any age. Part of the tragedy of mesothelioma is that many asbestos companies or industries that used the material refused to acknowledge it is dangerous. Civilizations around the world used asbestos for thousands of years, and even peoples as early as the ancient Romans knew that people who worked with the mineral died of lung ailments. Even into the 20th and 21st century these companies denied or covered up the evidence that linked their product to not only mesothelioma, but lung cancer and asbestosis as well. In order to address the mounting concerns about the legacy of asbestos, Senator Arlen Specter proposed a bill that would remove the ability of victims of mesothelioma to pursue legal settlements against the companies or industries that may be responsible. The government expects thousands of new cases of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases in the years to come, and so the bill will establish a $140 billion trust to compensate victims or their families. Ostensibly, this is to relieve the stress on the courts of thousands of lawsuits, but it in fact would severely limit the amount of financial restitution the companies would owe their victims. Furthermore it would disallow many types of asbestos suits, and would potentially extend legal proceedings far beyond the expected lifespan of the people afflicted with this deadly disease. How to Come Up with Cool Chat Up Lines

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Groshan Fabiola Lots of singles who become members of Dating Services websites are faced with a series of impediments in initiating or entertaining online conversations. Just like in real-world situations, fresh dating website members and inexperienced chatters usually find approaching singles in chat rooms difficult due to poor self-confidence and the omnipresent fear of being rejected. However, once you understand the basic rules behind online chatting, become aware of its simplicity and find the right ice-breaking lines, online chatting suddenly becomes a fun and stimulating experience. Its the simple, fun and non-demanding nature of online chatting that has turned it into a common practice these days, attracting increasingly larger numbers of people and enabling them to interact freely in chat rooms. First of all, online chatting is by far less challenging than regular, face-to-face conversations, as it eliminates a series of constraints and barriers, enabling chatters to act naturally and be themselves when having a fun, interesting dialogue with other persons. Secondly, online chatting enables singles to meet and know hundreds of potential dating partners quickly, effortlessly and in a relaxed, safe and entertaining environment. Thirdly, online chatting is renowned for its great potential of bringing people together. Thousands of singles have found their dating partners, long-term relationship partners or even life companions via online dating chat rooms. Considering these facts, feel free to actively participate in chat rooms and take full advantage of their offered benefits! Most people are permanently looking for 100 percent reliable icebreakers, considering that the lines used for initiating online conversations can decide whether they are accepted or rejected by persons of the opposite sex. However, these beliefs are totally unfounded! As long as you dont use any offensive, debasing chat up lines and you dont bore your chat partners to death, there is absolutely no reason for you to be rejected in online conversations. It is important to note that there is no guaranteed-to-work approach to online conversations and even the catchy chat up lines that work for some people may fail to produce the same results for others. The only key to successful, entertaining and captivating online conversation is to be relaxed, honest and make full use of your personality! The following collection of popular, commonly used chat up lines should be considered as a guide for initiating first-time conversations with singles of the opposite sex. Their main purpose is to familiarize you with the ‘dos’ and ‘donts’ behind online chatting and to help you come up with your own original chat up ideas. First of all, lets have a look at the clichs of chat up icebreakers, lines that arent very likely to produce any desirable effects. Avoid using ineffective lines such as: Hi! Do you know any cool opening lines?, You seem like a man / woman who knows how to talk to women / men!, Youve got to tell me your name, cause last night in my dreams I could only call you baby, Whats a great girl / boy like you doing in a place like this?; or very offensive and tasteless lines such as: Given that God is infinite and that the universe is also infinite, would you like a shag?. As long as you stay away from such cheesy, ridiculous chat up lines, and you come up with more interesting, fun icebreakers, things cant possibly go wrong! Some of the most commonly used chat up lines that have produced great results among both male and female chatters are the following: - Hi! How are you doing? simple, predictable yet very efficient icebreaker! - Excuse me, do you know how to spell the word … - asking for someone’s opinion is a great trick for initiating conversation! - Can you tell me whats the best way to - Nice weather we have today, isnt it? - I really like the way you introduce yourself - This is an interesting / fun thread, can I join you? - You sound bored so I thought Id cheer you up! - Someone as lovely as you deserves to talk to someone much better than me - modesty is always appreciated; however, there is the risk of being regarded as unconfident! - 10 ton penguin wait for a response and then reply: Well, I had to break the ice somehow! - Ive lost my phone number, can I have yours? - Whats your sign? - Hi, you dont know me, but I dreamt about you last night and I thought it would be fair to introduce myself. These are commonly used chat up lines that have produced favorable results and can be successfully used in most dating chat room conversations. Feel free to experiment with them and dont hesitate to create your own imaginative and ingenious icebreakers and chat up lines! Remember that originality always pays off so spend some time developing your own irresistible lines! How to Monetise Your Free Blog on My Speed Business Network

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Christine Anne Sutherland Today I want to focus on how you can get blogs to really work for you, drawing not only interest from other members, but also inspiring them to get in touch and comment, increasing the level of engagement and increasing the possibility of forming relationships that are rewarding in all sorts of ways! I know a lot of people think blogs are rubbish and I don’t blame them one bit. A blog is nothing more than a silly waste of space unless the content has value to the reader. This article, adapted from a blog post on My Speed Business Network, is an example. It seeks to add value to you, the reader, by giving information that will lead to your direct benefit. It seeks to tell you how to help develop your business through using the free resources on this site. As our membership grows, you’ll start to see people commenting on these little tips, adding their own thoughts and tips, and increasing the value of the whole thing. You can do this with your own business. Most business people have excellent articles or reports that are of immense interest to their target market. For instance an insurance broker would have articles on risk management, a financial planner would have articles on wealth building strategies, an accountant would have articles on cash flow management, a florist might have articles on types of flowers or flower arrangements, a veterinarian would have material on pet care, and so on. If you don’t have articles, you can of course have a professional write them up for you, or use articles generated by other people in your industry (with permission of course!). These articles become your blog posts, and people will read them and engage with them because you’ve created themed content that people actually want. This is very different to the well-meaning friend who mass mails their inbox to say “buddies, I’ve started a blog so that I can keep you up to date with my life, and now all you have to do is take the trouble to log into my blog every day and read my boring ramblings, and you’ll all know what I’m up to.” Blech. We’d never do that kind of blog, would we :-) So now its time to think about what kind of content your client base would be totally captivated by. What would compel them to engage in discussion with you? What would compel them to pass it on to their friends and colleagues so that they would join your blog also? If you already know the answer to that, fantastic, what are you waiting for, hop onto My Speed Business Network and get started. If you dont know, or would like feedback first, help is available for free on My Speed Business Network. We love quality blogs on our site and wed love to help you get yours going. The Top Myth Every Successful Orchid Grower Needs to Avoid

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Jonah Winn-Lenetsky A little light never hurt an orchid, only a lot of light can. Lack of light is one of the main reasons orchids wont flower in the home. Dont believe what they tell you about light in the basic guidelines for growing orchids. Many orchids benefit from filtered, or even direct morning and evening sun. Different types of orchids require different light levels. Vandopsis orchids can sometimes be grown in nearly full sun, as can some kinds of Cattleya. However, most orchids, even most Cattleyas will burn from too much, or mid-day sun. This is not caused by the light as you might think, but by the building up of heat within the leaf. Just like freezing, too much heat can actually break apart the cells, causing damage to the leaf and in extreme cases the entire plant. Here is a list of suggested footcandle ranges for different orchids (see below for a definition of footcandles): * Cattleya: 2,000-5,000 Footcandles * Phalaenopsis: 1,000-2,000 Footcandles * Oncidium: 1,000-3,000 Footcandles * Dendrobium Phalaenopsis: High Light Levels * Miltonias: 1,500-2,500 Footcandles * Vandas: 4,000-5,000 Footcandles * Paphiopedilums: 1,000-2,000 Footcandles Generally, if the weather is not too hot then morning sun, or light during part of the day through an east, south, or west facing window can be very beneficial to orchids. Light is necessary for orchids to flower. In fact, light is one of the main reasons orchids wont flower in the home. They may be growing just fine, but that doesnt mean theyre getting enough light to flower. Flowering takes a lot of energy and orchids get their energy from light and water. That orchid may look great in the middle of the room, but it will most likely never flower. This is true of most orchids, but not always true of Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilums, as well as amazonica species and hybrids which can do well in normal household conditions in close proximity to a window. These orchids thrive in a range of light close to 1,000 lumens, which is what theyll get next to an east or north facing window, or in a very bright room. However, they are especially low light orchids and cannot withstand direct sun on their leaves, with the exception of winter sunlight for a brief period in the far northern and southern latitudes. Definition of Terms: Lumens, Footcandles Light is generally measured in Lumens, or Footcandles. A footcandle is the amount of light produced in comparison to candles at one foot away. Therefore, two candles from one foot distance will emit two footcandles of light, a normal fluorescent light bulb will produce a couple thousand. One lumen is the amount of footcandles distributed over a one square foot area. In general an object will receive about 10,000 footcandles in full sun, on a bright sunny day in the middle of summer. On the other hand, the middle of a room on a dull grey day, with only one incandescent light fixture will probably receive only a couple hundred lumens. Far too little for almost any orchid to grow and flower. Generally 1,000 footcandles can be achieved in a bright north or west facing window. As well as in the middle of a brightly lit room, on a bright day. For higher levels of light, an east or south facing window, or artificial light will be necessary. Be careful to guard orchids from hot midday or early afternoon sun, by using a sheer curtain (one that still lets light through). Lumens and Footcandles are best measured with a light meter (often used by photographers). Jonah Winn-Lenetksy is a hobbyist orchid grower and plant lover living in Minneapolis, MN. Friday, September 14th, 2007

By Jen Carter A Woman has several options available to her once she marries. Will she take on her husbands name? Keep her maiden name? Perhaps shell add his last name to her own name with a hyphen separating the two. Although it seems quite confusing and complex, it really isnt. Read up on your name change options and decide for yourself. If the Wife Decides to Take Her Husbands Surname (Nancy Jones becomes Nancy Hill after she marries John Hill). This is a traditional routine embraced by couples globally. Nevertheless, many women prefer to break the tradition of adopting a mans last name, as they find it sexist. Others enjoy having their families share the same surname. If the wife decides to change her name, she must change her name on all legal documents including: drivers license, passport, utilities, and credit cards. Wife Decides to Hyphenate The Two Surnames (Nancy Jones becomes Nancy Jones-Hill). This option preserves the womans surname, while adding the husbands last name. Its very important that the wife always use the hyphenated name. If there are children involved, they too can adopt hyphenated names or keep their own. Wife Decides to Use Given Birth Name as Her Middle Name (Nancy Jones becomes Nancy Jones Hill, without any hyphenation. Whats the difference, you ask? Some people find the hyphenation awkward. This way, the maiden name is preserved, but the husbands last name can be added. Wife Decides to Keep Her Maiden Name (Nancy Jones remains Nancy Jones). Although this can lead people to believe you are not married, many women prefer to utilize this option. If a woman has been called Nancy Jones, her whole lifeshe may fear change and loss of her own identity. People who call Nancy Hill, unless corrected. Remind these people you are Nancy Jones wife of John Hill. Others think of Mrs. Hill, as a title and are not offended by the easily made mistake. Others still associate their name with their identity and become annoyed by the commonly made mistake. Wife Decides to Take Her Husbands Name Socially, Yet Keeps Own Surname Professionally (Nancy Jones is Nancy Jones on a professional level, but when she comes home from the office, shes Nancy Hill) This is a very popular option for a professional woman with a reputation. She can utilize the single surnames for whatever occasion. For instance, if Nancy Smith is a doctor, she will be known as Dr. Smith forever. Meanwhile, she may be known as Mrs. Hill by her childrens teachers. Jen Carter is owner of My Wedding Blog, a free wedding planner guide about weddings.
