Choose The Right Bed Wetting Alarms

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Jan Nicholas Moisture detector alarms are among the most effective tools in helping children overcome bedwetting. Unlike many of the devices and tools intended for children with Enuresis, alarms can actually treat bedwetting rather than just making the symptoms more bearable. Moisture alarm bed wetting devices are worn with underpants and the sensor of the alarm emits a loud sound when moisture is detected. The child can wake up and hurry to the bathroom in time. With use, the idea is to get the child to anticipate the alarm and wake up before any moisture is detected by the alarm. Within two or three months of nightly use, many children find that they can prevent all nighttime accidents and that they are actually getting up when their bladder is full and going to the bathroom. Because moisture detection alarms are so effective in helping children overcome bedwetting, many manufacturers make them. However, all the different moisture detector alarms are not made the same. If you choose the wrong model - one that makes your child uncomfortable or one that does not work well - the chances of success with the alarm are slim. You need a reliable and well-built alarm in order to help your child. Signs of a good alarm include: Reasonable price - the alarm must be affordable Comfortable to wear - your child will need to wear this alarm nightly for a few months, anything that digs into your child, prevents sleep or has sharp edges could be detrimental. Plus, if your child hates wearing the alarm, he or she may not wear it often enough for the alarm to actually work Right levels of sensitivity - it is important that the alarm responds to small amounts of urine, so that the child can wake up in time to go to the bathroom. At the same time, an alarm that is too sensitive may be set off by night sweats, which will not only interrupt sleep unduly but will also make the alarm less successful in curing bedwetting. Ease of use - the alarm must be easy enough for your child to set and reset even in the middle of the night. Some alarms have a remote system that allows parents to reset the alarm from another room. This is useful for younger children. Durability - your child may drop the alarm in the night or may knock the alarm against the walls or bed during a restless night Reliability - The alarm must work each time urine is present, or it will be difficult to teach your child to solve bedwetting. Hygienic design - since the alarm will be in contact with urine, it is essential for good health that the alarm can be easily cleaned or disinfected after each use without its functioning being affected Loudness - The alarm should wake your child (and you, if your child tends to sleep through alarms). Some alarms come with adjustable sound levels, which can be very useful. Plus, some alarms allow children to be woken with vibrations rather than sound. If you have large family, young children, or if your child shares a room, this can be a very useful feature. Plus, children not woken by sound may well be woken by movement, so this feature is very useful if your child has trouble being woken by an alarm. Secureness - Some alarms come with wireless technology to prevent tangling or pulled wires. This is a nice feature, but even a lower-end alarm is fine as long as it fits snugly with clips or some other secure fastener so that it will not dislodge even with nightly tossing and turning. Size - The alarm should be small enough to be worn with comfort, and should be the right size for your child. It should fit snugly enough so that it is not dislodged during a restless night Simple power sources - Most of these alarms work on batteries. Make sure any alarm you are considering buying uses batteries that are easily available. Stock up on batteries, as well. Guarantee - The manufacturer should be confident enough in the product to offer a full warranty or guarantee on the product. Remember: if the alarm does not work well each time, it will not be able to teach your child to overcome bedwetting. An alarm that is not consistent is useless. Quality made - The device should be sturdy and made with a design that shows some thought to patient comfort. The device should also be made to last. Of course, you may not be able to try the device out in the store. However, the package label may at least give clues as to which of the above qualities are present in a product. Doctor or clinic reviews and recommendations from other parents can also help guide you to the alarms that have most of the above features. WAIT! The Huge Advantages of Online Dating

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Jan Andersen Imagine the joy of finding the love of your life, an exciting romantic liaison or a rewarding friendship when you are looking and feeling your worst. You had a hellish time at work the previous day, you feel as though you havent slept a wink, your skin would be a voyage of exploration for a dermatologist and a crow would be more than happy nesting in your hair. You feel tired and fed up and your self-esteem is at an all time low. You long for someone special with whom to share your life, but right now you feel that even Quasimodo wouldnt consider you as a romantic option. In this moment of self-deprecation, how is meeting Mr or Mrs Right possible? By taking advantage of online dating, of course. Helen is 38 and works for a prestigious law firm. Her dating track record since the tragic and premature death of her husband five years ago has been poor. Although the majority of Helens work colleagues are male, she says, The majority of them are married and even if they were available, I would not be interested. I also dont think I could cope with having a relationship with someone involved in the legal sector. I imagine that we would find it very hard to leave our work behind. Socially, where does one go to meet likeminded men who are genuinely interested in a relationship as opposed to a one-night stand? Helen went onto explain that she met her late husband whilst at university and, during the many contented years of her marriage, she had a fairly blinkered view of dating agencies. I viewed them with suspicion, assuming that they were frequented by people who either had major personality flaws, or else had some ulterior seedy motive. I never once stopped to think about how difficult it is in this day and age to meet suitable companions in mainstream environments. Of course, about two years after Harrys death when I began thinking that I didnt want to spend the rest of my life alone, I realised that meeting other people was not that easy. Clubs and pubs really didnt appeal to me. I tried going with friends to wine bars, but found that I was largely on the receiving end of unwanted attention from men in whom I had no interest. It was also obvious that the majority of them were just after a quick thrill. Helen quickly began to view dating agencies as an attractive option, but didnt really like the idea of being computer-matched with someone. After all, that removed personal choice and she made it clear that she was not the sort of person who liked having choices made for her! Her decision to try online dating as an alternative was made whilst awaiting a dental appointment. In the waiting room, I came across an article on online dating as I was idly perusing the obligatory stack of well-thumbed womens magazines. The article must have been particularly well written, because I was instantly sold on the idea. The concept of being able to peruse a database of potential suitors whilst still in my dressing gown was extremely appealing. At least I knew that when I did dress up, it would be because I actually had a date, rather than putting a huge effort into preparing for a night cruising around social clubs, with no guarantee that I was going to meet someone. After my appointment, I couldnt wait to get home and begin checking out some of the sites that were recommended. Helen spent a long time researching the plethora of online dating sites before she found one that she felt catered for her needs, which of course included a level of security. I wasnt particularly drawn to totally free sites, because I felt that they were more likely to attract members who werent particularly serious about the process, or whose intentions werent entirely honourable. I was more interested in sites that allowed you to peruse profiles, but which required you to pay for full membership before allowing you to contact other members. That way, I knew that those I contacted were probably more serious about meeting someone special and not just after a quick fling. I wanted to sign up with a site where I felt totally in control and also secure in the knowledge that none of my personal contact details would be divulged to anyone unless I specifically chose to give out this information. I was also more impressed by sites that offered a range of relationship advice and articles. Helen eventually signed up with www.DatingHappy.com and says that it was one of the best decisions she has ever made. At first I felt rather embarrassed admitting to even my closest friends that I had chosen this route, but when I did, I was amazed at how many of them had also considered doing the same thing. One of my friends, whom I assumed had met her husband at the gym, admitted that she had actually met him via an online message forum. Although this wasnt the same as a dating agency, essentially it was no different. She had found someone with whom she shared common interests, but whom she had not previously met face-to-face and that is exactly how I began broadening my male social circle, except via a dedicated relationship facility. Helen says that she found the search process exhilarating. It was like being an invisible fly on the wall in a room full of interesting men from all walks of life with their personal profiles attached to them I could look, analyse and weigh up the options in a way that would be impossible if all those men were in one room. The best part was the convenience and the fact that it didnt matter one iota what I looked like or how I behaved! I also liked the idea of initially being able to build the foundations of a relationship on friendship and mutual interests, before actually meeting someone and being blinded by lust, which of course never lasts with the same intensity as at the beginning of a relationship! Has Helen met her match? Very possibly, she laughs. Ive had tremendous fun and Id like to say that I believe I have found a relationship with future potential, but youll just have to wait and see……!! Healthy Weight Loss Tips for Lifelong Success

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Chris Robertson Losing weight is never easy. It takes hard work and a new way of thinking. Perhaps you’ve tried one diet after another only to be disappointed by more weight gain. Fortunately, there are healthy ways to lose weight and keep it off. Use the healthy weight loss tips below to get started on the road to lifelong weight success. Get Creative with Your Diet Plan Think about your diet for a moment. Are strict regimen diets going to work when you’re so accustomed to eating what you want when you want? Do you have time and money to plan meals that require many ingredients that you’ve never even heard of? If not, then you probably won’t last long on many diet plans. When you determine that it’s time to lose weight, use the foods you already eat to your advantage - even the fattening ones. Don’t cut them out altogether, just eat smarter! Try eating your favorite items in smaller portions along with a new tasty food that’s healthy. For example, if your favorite meal is two cheeseburgers with fried potatoes, turn this into a healthier meal by eating only one cheeseburger, boil a potato for 45 minutes (tastes great with ketchup), and add a couple of vegetables such as green beans and corn to your meal. You’re actually getting more foods and adding good nutrition, but eating smaller portions of the fattening ones. The potatoes taste just as good boiled as they do fried but are much healthier! Add Protein-Rich Foods or Protein Shakes to Your Diet Another way to achieve healthy weight loss is to add protein-rich foods to your diet or drink protein shakes as snacks or replacement meals. There are even special diets and companies where you can get protein shakes customized for your body’s nutritional needs. Examples include the La Bamba diet, Shapeworks, Herbalife products, and so forth. With La Bamba Herbalife diets, you will use protein to get off extra pounds quickly. With other protein diets, you can drink protein shakes and take protein supplements for long-term dieting. It depends on your particular weight loss needs. Protein helps your body to burn the calories you eat throughout the day so your body does not continuously store fat in unwanted areas. Protein also helps build and preserve lean muscle mass. Drink Plenty of Water for Healthy Weight Loss Water is essential to a healthy weight loss plan. Water hydrates the body and organs. It gives you energy and helps you to fill full throughout the day. Water also helps your skin and cells. No matter what type of diet you choose, be sure to drink around six to eight glasses of water per day. The benefits of healthy weight loss are many: lower blood pressure, better figure, more energy, healthier heart and organs, less stress on bones, joints, and muscles, and less mental stress. *Note: As with any diet plan, consult with a physician to be sure there are no health risks when trying a new diet. If you have health conditions that would prevent you from eating certain foods, then find a diet that will be safe for you. Use the tips above to take back control of your weight and live life to the fullest! Five Tips on How to Eat Out and Still Lose Weight

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Robin Boddy Going out to eat in a restaurant can be one of the most daunting experiences if you are trying to lose weight. However, it neednt be. You can still enjoy a night out with your partner, or friends, and lose weight if you follow these five simple steps: 1. Be careful of what you drink. Most people know that alcoholic drinks contain a lot of calories, but there are other drinks that you need to avoid too. Anything that is extremely sweet will undoubtedly contain sugar, and that is what turns to calories if you do not burn it off with plenty of exercise. Water is by far the best option, but you can also have it flavored with a little fresh lemon or lime juice. Not only is it low calorie, but it will also help refresh your palette between courses. 2. Choose your appetizer wisely. Many appetizers may appear small, but they can be deceptively high in calories. Be aware of creamy sauces, or deep fried accompaniments. One of the best choices is soup, especially if it is a consomm or broth. Dont go for the clam chowder or lobster bisque even though seafood is extremely good for you, the cream-based soups are fatal for calorie counting. Ask for whole meal or granary bread, if you must have it with your soup, but dont use butter. Breadsticks are by far the best choice. You can make one last much longer than a bread roll by breaking off a small piece at a time. 3. Pick lean meat, poultry or fish but watch the extras. You may think that you have chosen your main course perfectly if you decide to order pork, chicken or white fish. You have also made sure that you have asked for it to be grilled, baked or broiled to remove the chance of any oil being used in the cooking. However, you didnt consider the calorie content of the accompaniments. Having steamed seasonal vegetables and a baked potato is wonderful, but you will destroy all of your hard work if they are smothered in butter! Also avoid any sauces, as the majority of those served with main courses are cream-based, and packed with calories. Fresh lemon and herbs make a wonderfully tasty and low calorie sauce, especially for chicken or fish. 4. Dont blow it all on the dessert. You have followed all of the rules throughout the meal, and then the desert trolley arrives. All of your efforts, up until that point, will have been for nothing if you choose the double chocolate gateau, with extra cream. Fresh fruit is the perfect option for a refreshing desert. Sorbets are also a great low calorie finish to a meal. 5. Enjoy the coffee, forget the liqueur. A liqueur coffee may seem like a harmless treat at the end of a meal, but the alcohol and cream that it contains is full of calories. Traditional floater-style coffees also have extra sugar added to enable the cream to float on the top of the coffee. An espresso, or cappuccino made with low-fat milk will round off your meal perfectly and not add to your calorie count. Of course, there are many more tips that you can use to be able to eat out and still lose weight. “Will That Be Cash Or Credit?”

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By A. Raymond Randall, Jr. From Bangkok to Edmonton, credit card statements stuff mail and email boxes with payment deadlines. Every bill reminds the giver that gifts given freely do not come free. Giving and buying often exceed generosity and need as a brittle piece of plastic becomes an avaricious spoiler of hopes and dreams. During this week, two families emailed me about credit card debt. One family lugs $12,000, and $50,000 shackles the other. Each family wants relief; however, debt accumulation comes easily while debt relief sucker punches emotions and wallets. Consumer debt burdens the workers of all economies. Highways jam with the doldrums, “I owe…I owe…It’s off to work I go”. . Truly, as an ancient proverb reminds us, “The debtor is servant to the lender”. Nearly every government graphs consumer debt. The U.S. Federal Reserve’s January report set U.S. consumer debt at 2 trillion dollars; the highest level in U.S. history. Canadians report an all time low savings rate (when debt goes up, savings goes down). Thailand consumers pushed debt levels up 25% last year. United Kingdom families might be forced to reduce their spending or sell their homes if interest rates ratchet up just 1%. Debt management resources can guide consumers to the high ground of debt relief as many credit management companies discover the need for debtor assistance and education. However, consider these steps before doling out more money to a credit assistance agency. 1. Manage your feelings. Take some time journaling your emotions about money by asking yourself where you learned personal definitions for fear and greed. Have some fun taking the innovative surveys found at Emode.com. 2. Push-off the weights of procrastination. Take action; do it now. This work requires sweat and concentration, but the rewards assure you of freedom and achievement. 3. If you learned to spend, you can master saving (ultimately, it’s all about saving). However, before spending more money on reducing your debt and increasing your savings, educate yourself. Go to Myvesta.org, a non-profit consumer financial education organization. You will find “how to” books, such as “How to Eliminate Your Debt Like a Pro” along with many other self-help resources. Don’t let someone else do for you what you can do for yourself. Working through your debt as a fascinating experience allows you to own your choices by changing your viewpoint. “Creditors have better memories than debtors.” - Benjamin Franklin 4. Myvesta may not suit all your needs, therefore add the Alexa.com toolbar to research other similar sites. 5. If married, discuss credit card management with your spouse. Two issues undermine romance: money and…well, you know the other one. 6. Don’t take a consolidation loan whether personal or home equity unless you find this the very last alternative. If you accept a loan, “shop…shop…shop ’till you drop” the interest rate. 7. If behind on payments, call credit card companies NOW…today…this minute. Find the right person for you to discuss your circumstance. If greeted with putdowns and parental tones, end the conversation, wait awhile and try another person. When you must, request a supervisor. Be gracious, professional and persistent with a plan of action. Most Americans carry 5 or more credit cards around. Take four of them and bury them in the backyard. Keep one for emergencies. Diligent efforts now will guide you toward financial freedoms in the future. Best wishes; if you act on this or similar recommendations, you will stand in a small crowd. Where Are The Fat Loss Problem Areas?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Jed Baguio The stubborn fat loss problem areas are the stomach, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, etc. Women are prone to fat formation than men owing to the hormonal changes occurring during puberty, pregnancy, menopause, premenstrual syndrome, and birth control pill usage. The hormones are also responsible for changes in the blood flow making women more susceptible to excess fat formation. Fat found in the subcutaneous layer of the skin are common to women due to the presence of large chambers in the female body that can easily accommodate fat storage. The common areas for excess fat formation are the buttocks and thighs. Fats are actually necessary to provide insulation for the body and cushion for the organs, muscles and nerves in the body. The appreciation of the rubenesque physique several centuries ago eliminated the vanity against fatty deposits in women. However as the health is held at stake in excessive fat deposits, fat loss is promoted to enhance a healthy and appealing body. Menopausal women and housewives are also prone to excess fat formation due to their sedentary lifestyle due to the lowered ability of the body to excrete the toxic waste that is trapped in the subcutaneous fat layers of the body. The presence of excessive fats is not a necessary indication of a heavy bodyweight however non-obese individuals may have excess fats too in some problem areas depending on their genetic predisposition. Diet and lifestyle is actually a common factor in excess fat occurrence but they can actually affect any woman of any size, weight and body structure. Diet plans is not necessarily comprised of unorthodox diet regimen that are unrealistic over a long period. Fat often returns when the strategy is abandoned because hormones and genetics play the culprit role for fat formation that affects lifestyle, diet and exercise. In contrast to popular belief, exercising a specific body part does not result in additional fat loss! The body has a predefined order of gaining and losing fat that cannot be modified by exercise alone or diet alone. The problem areas are usually the last to lose fat as the body has the natural, predetermined order of fat loss through exercise or any other method except in surgery. Investing in any machine or technique that promises to target specific problem areas does not to solve or promote fat loss as the overall weight loss is promoted by a proper dietary focus. . .CONTINUE If You’re Looking For A NO B.S., NO Holds Barred and NO Hype Weight Loss Newsletter That Really Works… click here: http://www.myweightlossnewsletter.com/ Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jed_Baguio http://EzineArticles.com/?Where-Are-The-Fat-Loss-Problem-Areas?&id=382829 sleeping pills ambien ambien zolpidem tartrate buy ambien online ambien facts ativan retrograde amnesia

Is Your Spouse Cheating?

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Stephen Hartrick If you think that your spouse is cheating it can be devastating! but the worst thing of all is thinking or even knowing that your spouse is cheating but not being able to either get any concrete proof or being able to catch them in the act. Because its this uncertainty that can mess with your mind and drive you insane even more so if no one believes your claims! Well here is some clues you can keep an eye out for if you suspect your spouse of cheating on you. 1) Often at the start of an affair your spouse will be more affectionate towards you (guilt!) 2) May start to find fault in most of the things you do, usually when the affairs been going along for awhile so as to justify the affair to themselves. 3) Starts to lose interest in family activities like spending time with the kids, and going on family days out. 4) They may become distant and cold, blames you and the kids for their lot in life. 5) you may find unexplained charges on your credit card statement, bits of money going to unknown sources. 6) they may start taking more care of their appearance, taking more baths, having their hair done more and so on. 7) Clues start to appear as an example, lipstick on the collar(old one but still very common surprisingly!)perfume smells, little notes still in their pockets with either phone numbers or weird little messages on them. 8) Car suddenly needs more gas in it than usual. 9) Start getting wrong number calls more often and also hear them whispering down the phone to some unknown person. 10) your spouse suddenly has two cell phones (usually because their old phone keeps playing up but at the same time they still need to keep it!)or another trick is to have one cell phone and two sim cards and they just swap when needed. Like i said before not knowing is worse i think than actually knowing, at least if you know you can come to a decision, whereas not knowing your kind of stuck in limbo for as long as it takes to catch them out. If you want to know a bit more than just the tips i have written here then go here http://www.squidoo.com/cheatingspouse/ to find out more info on how you can find out for sure! Home Skin Care Tips: Emily’s Smart Move

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Joel Walsh Ever wonder how some people manage to do all their skin care at home, without the expensive skin care products you’ve tried, and still look better than you do? No, they’re not secretly using the most expensive product at the cosmetics counter. Its not easy, but successful home skin care is certainly possible. Meet Emily This is the story of Emily, one hypothetical person who used home skin care tips she found online to look like a million bucks for a few dollars worth of household supplies and a little creativity. Emily had to go on a camping trip in a few days with her new boyfriend and a group of his friends, all of them real nature nuts. Emily was afraid that being in such close contact with her boyfriend and his friends would make it impossible to keep up the pretence that her shining skin was really just all her positive energy radiating out–and not several hundred dollars worth of skin care products, each one made of a long list of chemicals Emily couldn’t even pronounce. Home Care Tips for Skin: Emilys Salvation? Emily decided to search online for home care tips for skin. She knew it would be foolish simply to trust the manufacturers of skincare products for this information. Searching on the internet, she found a website that did not belong to a skin care products manufacturer, but instead reviewed different products and provided information on living a healthier, less toxic lifestyle. She followed the links on those sites to websites that sold books, tools, and ingredients for home skin care. Emily knows there are a lot of cheats on the web, even when it comes to something as simple as home care for skin. She didn’t want to try something recommended by someone who didn’t know what they were talking about and risk giving herself a rash, so she was careful. Heres what she looked for: Some of the websites that sold skin care products had a link to the Better Business Bureau. Clicking on the link, Emily saw the companys record: member in good standing with no unresolved complaints. Emily looked at several websites before trying any of the home care tips on her skin, to see if there were any disagreements about what to try. For instance, one website recommended using an old-fashioned wart remedy, while another website warned against the old remedy, saying it could provoke an allergic reaction in some people. Emily double-checked on the tips she had found by searching on the names of any ingredients or techniques she didn’t recognize. That way she would know exactly what she was getting herself into. Emily looked out for any claims to results that were too good to be true. She skipped anything that sounded like a medicine that would have to be sold with a prescription–using words like “cure” or promising to radically alter her body’s chemistry. When Emily was finished with her internet research, she set aside a few hours after she got home from work to test the tips out. She used a patch of skin on her leg that would be covered up anyway, and left plenty of time before the camping trip. That way, she wouldn’t have to parade around the scars of any mistakes. Did Emilys Home Skin Care Tips Work? Emily ordered some essential ingredients for home care skin remedies online with overnight shipping. She also printed out some articles with instructions for home skin care tips that only required ingredients she already had at home. One of the remedies Emily tried out worked, but the lemon juice left her smelling a little too appetizing. She wouldn’t want to be fending off mosquitoes all during her trip, so she put that one aside for later. Several of the tips didn’t work at all. But she did find a recipe that used chamomile and wheat germ to make a pretty effective skin softener. She also learned how to deal with stress better to keep small lines from forming on her face. On the camping trip, one of her boyfriend’s female friends bragged how everything in her cosmetics case was biodegradable. Emily wowed everyone when she showed them that everything in her cosmetics case was not only biodegradable, but edible. Now Emily’s boyfriend is amazed to have found a woman who is not only beautiful but rugged, too. Fired, Laid Off, Unemployed Or About To Lose Your Job

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By JoAnn Hines The words that strike fear in all working people — fired, terminated, laid off, let go, restructured, dismissed, downsized, rightsized — translate into only one thing: You’re back in the job market and beating the street for new employment opportunities. Don’t panic or spend too much time feeling sorry for yourself. Getting right back into the job market when losing your job is hard to deal with. The best thing you can do (even if you received a severance package) is look at the firing as a chance for a better opportunity. Getting fired is no longer considered a negative on your resume. It’s part of today’s job arena. TIP: For every $10,000 of salary, add a month to the job search to find employment. How do you deal with being fired or downsized in terms of your resume and job-hunting? How do you get you in shape to find an even better job than the one you just lost? Decide on a career path or make a change if necessary. If you loved your last position and the industry you worked in, then move to the next point. However, if you weren’t happy, now is the time to think about or implement a career change. What kind of transferable skills did you acquire from your previous employment? For example, if you worked in a customer service capacity, and now want to get into sales, you have valuable sales and people skills — transferable skills from one position to another. If you’re not sure what you want to do, you should do some self-assessment. You can find great career assessment tests on the Web. TIP: Consider a career coach to determine these skills. Tweak that resume: Ideally, you’ve been keeping your resume current, but if you have not now is the time to take a hard look at it. The first thing you need to decide is whether to include the job from which you were terminated on your resume. In most cases, you should include it — unless you only worked there a short period of time (less than three months). Show an end date from your previous job. Focus on your accomplishments and achievements. Consider adding — if you don’t already have these sections — key accomplishments and transferable skills sections for your resume. Positioning these sections at the top of your resume also means you can downplay your actual employment historyor at least make it secondary to your accomplishments and skills. A functional resume, rather than a traditional chronological resume, will also serve this purpose. Develop both a traditional formatted resume and a scannable (text-only) resume. Since job-hunting has expanded to include traditional methods as well as online methods, you need to have both types and several versions of your resume. Get your resume critiqued. Ask someone in your network — possibly a former boss or college career office (most work with alumni) to review your new resume(s) and offer constructive criticism. Resolve location issues: Now is the time to evaluate if enough opportunities exist where you currently live or if you need or want to relocate. TIP: If you have a spouse or significant other be sure and involve them in this discussion. Network, network, network: Tell everyone you know that you are in the job market again. You don’t need to tell them you were fired if you don’t want to, but don’t be ashamed of it either, as labor figures indicate that many people have lost (or will lose) their jobs involuntarily. Your network includes your family, friends, former coworkers, former bosses, neighbors, and friends of friends — just about anyone. These people may not be able to offer you a new job, but they may know someone who can, consequently they play a vital role in your job search. Once you find a new job, make sure you keep networking rather than waiting until you don’t have a job to do so. Revisit your references and referrals: Depending on the circumstances surrounding your dismissal, you may or may not have a good reference from your former employer. Now is the time — regardless — to revisit your reference list. You need to contact these people. Inform them that you are again in the job market, and ask if they will still be a reference for you. If you think your former employer might give you a bad reference, it is extremely important that you have other people who will rave about your accomplishments and abilities. Be prepared to work @ getting a new job. It’s a clich, but looking for a new job is now your full-time job. Stay focused and accomplish something every day. Dont go brain dead from too much job searching. Set limits on the amount of time you will commit each day. TIP: Be prepared for rejection. You may be a little extra sensitive because of being fired, but remember that there is always a degree of rejection in any job search — so don’t let it get you down. We are quarter way though 2006 Will your job still be there at the end of the year? Are you feeling anxious about this year’s job market? You’re not alone. Its a tough market. In one year 50% of your associates will change jobs or locations. Be as prepared as possible before you are faced with the inevitable. Ten Proven Strategies That Will Keep You on the Right Track 1. Assess yourself: Take time to do a thorough self-assessment. Understand what you truly want. Do you want to still be an employee or is it time to make the break into self-employment? What are your values and interests? What are your preferences for industries, companies, functions, locations, job content, people you’d be working with and for, and organizational culture, style, and size? What are your strengths and skill sets? Most importantly, what do you envision your next job to be? TIP: If you need help let our career coach focus your efforts. 2. Create a personal business plan: * Explore/research companies broadly. * Narrow your choices: pick key targets. * Design your marketing plan (your resume, how you will promote yourself, how you’ll connect into the industries/companies, how you will follow up, etc.) * Do you have a weakness? Is there a knowledge or skill you need to be competitive? (Better plan now to enhance those skills.) * Can you differentiate yourself or make you a stronger candidate? * Do you know industry’s buzzwords and vocabulary? Do you know what’s hot and what is not? 3. Use career services websites: Participate selectively; use your time management and prioritizing skills to help decide which resources you should take advantage of. Career centers offer a variety of resources to help you including advice/counseling, articles, recruiters, and a resource center/library or website which provides books, directories, website links, reports, research, and other resources. 4. Research the industries in which you are interested: Do your homework. You can’t be too prepared. A common refrain I hear from recruiters about someone who’s impressive is, She/he really understands our business and asked some great questions.” Learn which companies are in strong financial positions and which are not. This is doubly important today with all the downsizing, mergers and acquisitions. TIP: Don’t go from one uncertain situation to another. 5. Research the selected companies: Ask yourself questions like: How does this company stack up against its competitors? What is the company’s culture? What are its values and personality? Who are the leaders? What are they like, and how do they value (or not value) people? What is the company’s level of innovation, turnover, and commitment to developing and keeping its employees? Read the company’s job descriptions, check out its website, and get evaluations of the company from anyone you know that might do business with the company or work there. 5. Develop a distinctive resume: If you will be changing industries, your resume is extremely important in helping you stand out from other candidates. Remember recruiters see hundreds of resumes. In a few seconds they will determine whether you get a second look. Your resume is just like your “elevator pitch.” Be prepared to tell the essence of who you are in a single page. TIP: PERFECT Your “Elevator Speech.” 6. Explore interviewing skills: Learn the anatomy of an interview, approaches to interviews, interviewers favorite questions, and interviewing philosophies. Keys to success in the interview include preparation and practice. TIP: Ask friends and colleagues to interview you. Have them give you the third degree. 7. Network, connect, and follow up: 80% of all jobs come though networking. Its not whom you know but who knows you. Use organizations/associations that facilitate the information generation process. Our suite of resources posts our members’ press releases and new training programs, technologies and general business information. Stay “Connected” 24/7 8. Reflect, refine, and redirect your search: Be critical of yourself. How are you doing? Where could you improve? What help or advice do you need? Who can provide that to you quickly? Are there gaps in your performance that need filling in? Are they knowledge gaps (e.g., you aren’t up to speed on industry lingo), or skill gaps (e.g., your cover letters aren’t as sharp as they might be)? Remember: Knowledge is attainable, and skills can be developed. TIP: Don’t obsess. You cannot be all things to all people. Sell to your strengths not weaknesses. 9. Mind your etiquette throughout the process: Stay in touch and connected. Keep your network open. Are there colleagues you haven’t been in touch with in a while? Shoot them a quick E-mail and let them know what you are doing. TIP: Do not wear out your welcome. Etiquette also means returning calls promptly, not harassing the employer, and telling others who help you that you appreciate their efforts. 10. Leverage the best job/career-related websites.
